TJ Test Prep for 7th Graders

SIGN UP NOW FOR SPRING 2012!

We have had a number of calls asking if we offer a preparation program for 7th graders. We also have found that scheduling is a huge problem and so over the past year we have developed a program that takes into account the changing needs of the students and parents.

Flexibility seems to be a key need for our clients. In response to this need we offer drills for math, reading, and essay writing. [Gosh, I just realized: that's the three "R"s -reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic. I guess some subjects are still essential!]

Sessions start in late January and extend to early-June. All sessions are stand alone so you can sign up for any quantity.

Practicing Essay Writing is EssentialEssay Drill: The essay drills are one-hour long. In each session we start off with some discussion of what TJ is looking for in the essays, if necessary, give some background information about a topic, have the student write a 20-30 minute essay on a prompt, and then discuss the students’ essays together. During these drills the instructor will discuss possible topics for the TJ admissions test essay, give some background information for context, give pointers for writing cogently, and introduce the prompt.

If a student is reluctant to have his or her work discussed in class, Dalby can arrange to review the essays privately for a fee of $15-25 depending on time needed to critique.
If a student wants additional comments on the essay written, there is a surcharge of $15 to $25 for Dalby to review the essay outside of class and return it with comments to the student. The essay sessions meet Thursdays from 8pm to 9pm.

Math Drill: During the hour long session we will administer a 20-25 question test that will take between 25-30 minutes and is similar in content to the TJ math test. After we will grade and review the missed test questions, discuss speed math strategies, and answer students questions. Some questions will be easy (usually at the beginning) and then they get progressively harder toward the end. Tests will cover basic math, mean, median, mode, algebra, geometry, combinations, permutations, graphs, and word problems. Class will emphasize speed, accuracy, and math remediation. The math drill sessions are held Thursdays 7 to 8pm.

Reading Drill: Over the hour session we will read several passages and answer the associated questions. The instructor will discuss errors and give strategies for improving speed, comprehension, and accuracy. We find that students at this age, even bright ones, need repetition. We repeat concepts frequently, as needed, to help emphasize efficient reading and effective comprehension. The reading drill sessions are held Thursdays 6 to 7pm.

It is important to be on time so you don’t hold up the class.
You may arrive early if you need to.

Each hour-long drill session stands alone so you can come to two sessions, skip three because of some project, come back for another series and then disappear for a theater production or sports commitment.

We recommend you come to one drill of each subject, see how you like the format and the instructor and then sign up for the number of drills you think you need. We are happy to guide you in this process.
Sessions are $30 per hour with a quantity discount of $25 per hour when you sign up for 10 or more drill sessions.

This program is a supplement not a replacement to our regular 8th grade comprehensive six-session late summer/fall program. The purpose is to thoroughly review and drill concepts to establish the base for the six-week class. If you are unsure of your need for extensive preparationyou may take a diagnostic test without obligation at a cost of $90 anytime . (There are no obligations to sign up for any other class).
